Does anyone know whereabouts of BOB BROWN, civil engineer, originally from Letchorth/Stevenage area?

Bob travelled to India in Feb '69 with 5 others in an old Landrover.  The party split in Patna in April, Bob stayed in India to work with a  French charity - Brothers to India - installing pumps in wells.  Last heard from in October '69 recovering from hepatitis.  No news since but 4 of the original group are in contact and would love to hear from him.  He would probably be in mid 60s now.

I assume you have tried Friends Reunited. If so the next step is FindMyPast.com.I was trying to find a former girlfriend a few years ago and checked on this site to find that sadly she had passed away a few years previously. I hope you find your friend alive and well.

MichaelH - thanks for your response and for your suggestions.  I haven't tried Friends Reunited but will give it a try with the other site you suggest.  I think the result of all this may be similar to your own, there are circumstantial indications that Bob never got home from India.  I don't think Bob went to Sheffield University - a couple of us on the trip would probably have remembered that detail as we are natives of the city, though neither of us went to the University there.  The Institute of Civil Engineers were singularly unhelpful.  The acronym ICE seemed particularly appropriate...  But thanks for your interest, we've probably left it too long and the trail has gone cold.

Tim – thank you for your comments – much appreciated. I became interested in Family History Research and ‘People Finding’ (for lack of a better description) a few years ago after finding a long lost cousin in Australia and getting involved in tracing the missing members of a pension scheme I was in when the company went bankrupt (sadly the end result of this will be near poverty in retirement). What I would say is neither get obsessed nor give up. A friend went to live overseas over a quarter of a century ago. When I met up with her in 2004 she said she had always wondered what had become of her best friend at primary school – due to circumstances they had lost contact over 30 years ago. Although we got nowhere fast we finally made contact with her last month (she remembered her ‘best friend’ from all those years ago well!). A useful additional source of information was Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies www.hertsdirect.org/hals. I was once heavily involved in telecommunications. If there is any chance Bob stayed on in India for any reason they do have an electronic directory; http://www.numberway.com/phone-numbers/186/ . It is split up into regions and states and does take some time to search. Like Indian railways it does not work every day but is worth a go.

Regards,

Michael
