I became interested in Family History Research and ‘People Finding’ (for lack of a better description) a few years ago after finding a long lost cousin in Australia and getting involved in tracing the missing members of a pension scheme I was in when the company went bankrupt (sadly the end result of this will be near poverty in retirement). What I would say is neither get obsessed nor give up. A friend went to live overseas over a quarter of a century ago. When I met up with her in 2004 she said she had always wondered what had become of her best friend at primary school – due to circumstances they had lost contact over 30 years ago. Although we got nowhere fast we finally made contact with her last month (she remembered her ‘best friend’ from all those years ago well!). A useful additional source of information was Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies www.hertsdirect.org/hals. I was once heavily involved in telecommunications. It is split up into regions and states and does take some time to search. Like Indian railways it does not work every day but is worth a go.
