Hola Kay - nothing much on the tv this evening so I thought I would scan the Welwyn Times and lo and behold found your message. How lovely to hear from you.
It was specially poignant to read that you remember my father who passed away some years ago now. We have been in Spain since 2004 and are still very much enjoying our life here. The weather is still wonderfully warm during the days but gets chilly in the evenings. I of course remember all the girls names you have mentioned (girls being a bit optimistic now !!!!) and would love you to remember me to them when you are in touch. In particular I would be interested to hear about Susan Rogers as we were quite close during the High School Days.
Jim remembers your other half as well and sends his best wishes.
This is Michael Womack. I don't know if you are still checking this communications means but hope that you are.
I saw your entry while checking the WGC High School website on google and thought that I would give you a quick email to see if you are still in South Australia. I am still living in Melbourne and would be delighted to hear from you. I remember visiting you and your parents on a couple of occassions shortly after coming to Australia, but that was a long time ago now.
Is Penny still in Australia? if so please pass on my best wishes.
My name is Bernard Dawson and you may not remember me from school as I was one or two years behind you. I have just joined Friends Reunited and have looked through for familiar names.
I can recall you at school as we used to watch you play guitar at lunchtime and I have followed your progress in the music industry since. I can recall Mr Gilbey, Mr Edwards (PE), Mr Bull (History) Miss Hyde (French). I was in St George's House. I can also recall that we had The Zombies for a Christmas dance before they hit the charts.
I also came across your name when I did a search on The Hop. This was my regular haunt and I recall Tony Rivers and the Castaways and many other bands who played there. Jeff Beck was playing for an unknown band when I saw him and he stopped the show. I would be interested to know if you knew an old friend of mine by the name of Pete Parkin (not from school, but he used to manage a band that played at the Hop).
I was also in Miss Fletcher's Class and would really appreciate a copy of the School Photgraph.
You mention the name Forder his christian name was Martin.
You may recall Victor Meech who died of a heart attack over 15 years ago and also Angela Watson in a motor accident over 30 years ago.
I see that Paul Griggs is on Facebook.
Roger Fisher was my Best Man when I was married in 1966
I look forward to hearing. Just remembered Diane Nightingale Maureen Mclaughlin Valerie Newton Ron Devlin Alan Sann William Holmes Peter Kerrison Gillian Hart Pat Bilton Sheila Petch Roger Wilbourne Martin Figg Lionel Dodge Christopher Harrison Ian Fleming Colin Ellis Colin Hurst Dave Winter Stanley Braybrooke Adrian Whalley.
Hi Susan and anyone else reading this, at work Googling and found this site, I remember you and most of those listed on the forum ,could add a few more.
I now live in a small village just off the M1 jcts27/28 moved there 18 years ago when hubbies firm moved.
Whenever I am back in WGC I look out for Kay, last saw her at the shops on Pangshanger, read the Welwyn Times for news on anyone.(visiting parents)
Kepted in touch with Janet Plastow till she moved from Grantham to Ashbourne, Derbsyshire a few years ago.
I went to a reunion at the school about 20years ago with Janet but it was pupils from all years not just our's the first year. Believe Martin Ford organised it.
Miss Brittian, music teacher was there,
I am married with two sons and one daughter and one grandson.
I am stilll working , hubby, Dave, retired , would love to retire and just travel as planned around Europe in Motorhome No.7 or take motorbikes and ride around the Scottish Highlands.
Hope to get to Isle of Man this year aswell. My daughter spent 6weeks touring rural Spain on her motorbike a few years ago, would go back tomorrow if possible.
Would be interested if anyone arranged a get together at anytime.
Delighted to see more of the old names on the page I started some while back - Alan and Margaret. Of course I remember both of you.
Hubby (James) and I have been living in Spain for 5 years now some 40 kms from Alicante but set well inland in a beautiful valley with of course lots of mountains. The weather in Spain is not always sunny however and we have had rather a harsh winter complete with winds that actually caused a lot of structural damage to a few properties but we were lucky enough to escape unscathed.
We have four grandchildren now and that is the hardest part of not being in the UK anymore. However, I do tend to make short trips three or four times a year plus a much longer one for the Xmas holidays. Even grandchildren can sometimes seem much more desirable at a distance - if you know what 1 mean!!!!
Tim if you are out there I think we are all still waiting for copies of the first year photo - any chance?????
Hello Kay, my sincere apologies for not replying to your, or Paul Griggs' message, until now - I so rarely look at this site! I remember you and Karen Harris very well indeed and know that you were friendly with my brother Michael (Mick to most people). Like Susan, I have been living in Spain for some time - more than 21 years actually, so only rarely get to visit WGC. I am still in close contact with Queenie and the family. I remember Les very well too, and of course Dave and Hazel - when you are next in touch with them, please do give them my very best wishes; I am sure they will be a little amused to hear that I am still in regular contact with Stuart Minns and we have actually met up a couple of times here in Spain when he has been visiting. If anyone wants to contact me direct, you are welcome to use my personal email address - jacki.pamflett@gmail.com It hardly seems possible that it is now just over a year since we lost Mick, very sad. Kind regards, Jacki
I do remember the name but not the face. Yes I spent every spare minute at school playing guitar and I would play at any party or gathering whether they wanted me to or not. Miss Britten was very patient and tried hard to get me in the school orchestra, first playing Double Bass ands then Timpani, but I was only interested in Lonnie Donegan. I've been in touch with Tim Williams who said he thought Miss Britten was related to the composer Benjamin Britten, can anyone confirm. It's good to see a few more names in this forum, I also occasionally bump into Kay in Morrisons and I seem to remember Margaret Mandell played violin.
I often played at the Hop in the sixties with my band The Cortinas and Tony Rivers is a lifelong friend who I first met at Butlins in 1961. Today he lives in Almeria, Spain. I've just published a book called "Diary of a Musician" based on diaries I kept from 1960 while still at school, check out www.diaryofamusician.com . At sixty four years young I still manage to gig up to three times a week and will never give up until it gives me up. Pete Parkin still lives nearby and next time I see him I'll mention your name.
The High School days seem a long time ago but I was amazed when Tim Williams sent me the first year photo and I managed to remember all the names except three and yet if my wife says "don't forget to get some milk" there's no chance.
I have lived in Australia since 1966, so remembering names etc. can be more difficult ythan if you rermained in the area.
You may be interested in the school photos I have - they include the original founding year, Mr Bulls class (a couple of years later, with you, believe, between Michael Chambers and David Irving and one photo Paul Griggs sent me of one of Mr Windlass's class.
My email address is twilliams@murtons.com.au
I have been married for 40 years to Maria (who comes from Finland) and we have one married son David and a grandson Callum.
I retired last year from one of those high pressure finance positions with Toyota, which involved me flying to Melbourne on a weekly basis, which I am happy to have left behind. I now look after the accounting side of a charity 2 days per week and spend the other days looking after my bus company, which I share with another ex Pom, and the company is located some 500kms North East of Adelaide - in Broken Hill.
I would be most interested in corresponding with you and finding out what has happened with other ex High School students.
I have been emailing with Paul Griggs and have read his facinating book.
Although it has taken nearly two years, by the time you read this, you should have received a copy of the founding year school photo to your email address.
Could you please let me know which girl is you - I am sure once you point yourself out I will remember.
I am in the back row, fifth from the left as you look at the photo, Michael Chambers is on my RHS and David Irving on his.
If you have any form photos from the time we were there, I would be most interested to see them.
I am thinking of travelling to the UK with Maria, my wife, next year - I would love to think that we could organise some sort of a reunion!
Just found this web-site. I was at WGC High School in the early 60s having moved from a Grammar School in London. Don't remember a lot of names on this forum, but lots of the teachers' names very familiar. I too have a school photo probably taken 1961, 1962 or 1963. Anybody out there with a better memory than me?
I am afraid I don't remember you either, but I have just been introduced to this web-site by Michael Womack (see later postings) with whom I have kept in touch at Christmas since our WGC High School Days. I have a School Photo which must have been taken in 1961, 1962, or 1963. Anybody out there remember us?
Wow 16,000 hits it is very exciting that so many people are interested in chatting to long lost friends from the days of the High School in WGC. Good to see also how many people there are all over the world. Wishing you all the very best wherever you are!!!! -
