Not sure about a new pub being built , but the black squirrel/ mexican is being re-opened as the globe! Looks like it will be a nice place to have a drink and not a cheap get it down your neck kinda of place. It will be doing live music as well !
I dont know of any new pubs and doubt if they will allow a new one, only existing pubs as letchworth is a funny place. The old squirrel was a hell hole until it was renovated by the person who had the mexican. I spoke to him the other day and he spent about 200 k in there to fix everything. 22 k was just on electrics as the old ones where illegal. Apperntly had to pull about 5,000 per week and the place is out of the way a bit and although busy weekends and attempting things like mic night etc just couldnt make enough money and that was then so probably have to pull about 6k a week now. The most worrying thing is how quite the main pubs in letchworth are ie: hogs head and the magnets (big weatherspoon chain)
Although the globe place will be smart looking sadly letchworth just dont deserve it! No one in letchworth want to pay more then they have to. If that old mexican place was in hitchin it would have made a bomb, also I hear that the old mexican / new globe is a punch taverns premises which means ties to lager which means that they cant compete with the cheaper chains and as it was a cocktail / wine bar at the mexican and it was proven that this has already been attempted. It will prob last 6 months to a year mainly because the premises was already fixed up so the outlay will be less. Sad but that sums up letchworth thinking! They dont respect anywhere thats half decent.
There is a little wine bar place on the station that ok for couples. But I really doubt if letchworth heritage would put another pub in letchworth.
