A self-defence expert from Hoddesdon is offering to start women only classes after reading a Herald article.

David Chastell, 23, of the Street Wise Self Defence Association (SWSDA) contacted The Herald after seeing a story in which a female cyclist fought off a man who grabbed her as she cycled home (Female cyclist fights off man, Herald, July 28).

"I saw the article in The Herald and as a self defence instructor I thought I could do something to help, so I have decided to offer specifically designed self defence courses for women in the East Herts area," he said.

"Self defence is not only about defending yourself physically, it is also about increasing your awareness of your surroundings."

He added: "I was told by a fellow instructor you are more likely to be attacked in the street where you live because you feel more relaxed there and are less aware than you would be in an unfamiliar area."

The former St Edmunds College student said: "I've been teaching self defence for more than a year. I began by teaching a women's class with a fellow instructor.

"I now run a children's class at Hertford Heath village hall for ages six to 15, and for seniors aged 15 and upwards."

He vowed you do not need to reach an elite level to fend off an attacker: "You don't have to be a black belt or Bruce Lee to be able to defend yourself," he said.

"By learning a few basic steps you will double your chances in the case of an attack.

"I want to help people by running these classes. Everybody has the right to walk along the street with confidence and feel safe. If the classes help just one person fend off an attack they will have been a success."

The classes will show how the tone of your voice, your posture and body language can put off an attacker, without resorting to any physical techniques.

David gave a few tips as to how you can increase you own safety: Walk towards oncoming traffic so travelling cars will be visible to you; keep to well-lit areas when walking alone; if you are travelling on your own let someone know when you will be leaving; use common sense and if possible avoid walking alone.

The instructors at SWSDA are fully qualified, insured, first aid qualified and CRB checked.

They are offering a free introductory self defence class, with the view to running a six-week basic self-defence course, which includes six or seven lessons for £60. For more information look at www.streetwiseselfdefence.
