HERTFORD is to be the centre of a nationwide search to create the UK's biggest girl band - a girl group made up of singers who are all at least a size 16.

More than 500 singers from across the country have applied to join the five-girl group, provisionally called 'Plus'.

Auditions for the band will be held at the Hertford Marquee Club, on Railway Street.

Organisers, online magazine, Just as Beautiful, say they have been overwhelmed by the number of plus-size women eager for an opportunity at stardom.

Spokesman Kizzi Nkwocha, said: "The music industry has a definite bias against any female singer who is over a size 12. We've had literally hundreds of women, all over size 16, applying to become a member of Plus.

"Most of these are incredibly talented singers who have been turned away by the music industry because of their size."

The new band's website, realgirlband.com, says: "We want to take back the stage and give it to real girls and women. Plus is the band the world has been waiting for.

"A real girls band made up of real females who aren't afraid to say 'we're plus size, we're beautiful and we can sing'."

Auditions for the band will be held at The Hertford Marquee Club in June.

Among the judges are plus-size fashion designer Tracy Carr, soul legend Ruby Turner, PR consultant Kizzi Nkwocha, Big Girls Paradise director Linda Koch and International Women of Excellence Award winner Barbara Campbell.
