Action to poison thousands of fish in a bid to eradicate an invasive species has begun.
The drastic solution to the topmouth gudgeon menace in Cuffley Brook started today (Thursday) and will kill off all other fish.
The Environment Agency is carrying out the work and is being supported by a Metropolitan Police marine unit.
Today police (@MPSonthewater) tweeted: “Marine 31 have been up at Cuffley Brook in @MPSEnfield today assisting the @EnvAgency with their cull of top mouth gudgeon #invasivespecies” [sic].
The deadly fish, which are only around three inches long, are known to totally dominate and out-compete native species and cause their demise.
The Asian invaders also carry a disease which can kill off salmon and trout.
