PLANS to convert a former pub into a Tesco in Welwyn Garden City are a step closer after a planning application was lodged.
The retail giant wants to transform the Oak Tavern in Moors walk into a convenience store but a ward councillor is unconvinced by the designs.
Cllr Ben Yetts said: “The plans don’t tell what they want to have in store in terms of store facilities.
“I have asked them a couple of terms I have limited correspondence with Tesco.
“It is going to have a negative impact on Lidl and if there is a bakery in there it will have a negative impact on Simmons, which is a local spot where people like to have a cup of tea.
“However many jobs it is going to provide in opening this store it is going to have a negative impact on other store – that’s one of the reasons I have raised concerns.”
Tesco lodged the plans after the beleaguered boozer was suddenly shut by Punch Taverns in October.
Residents can air their views on the plans until next Tuesday when the public consultation ends.
