HATFIELD Town’s relegation battle took a major turn for the worst last night (Wednesday) when they were hammered 5-1 at home to Tring Athletic.

It was never going to be easy to face Tring in the SSML Premier Division, who had won their last two league games, including a 2-0 victory against title-chasing Dunstable Town.

But the margin of defeat will hit The Blueboys hard as they gear up for a major battle to stay in the division.

Hatfield were 3-0 down with strikes coming from Reon Thomas, Tony Fields and Chris Salmon before defender Jay Welsh, Hatfield’s top-scorer, netted after some fine play from Sam Perrin.

But Tring weren’t finished and the points were wrapped up when Connor Waite and Connor Smith finished off the game at 5-1.

It’s worrying times indeed for Hatfield Town, who are bottom of the league, and they face a real derby battle on Saturday as they travel to take on Hertford Town.
