ST ALBANS City’s Midweek Youth took another step forward to claiming the League title with a commanding 3-0 win away at Windsor FC.
With next season in mind the U18s again had nine first year’s in the starting line-up and with another three on the bench it was a very youthful but exciting team.
City were quick out of the blocks and early chances fell to Matt Taylor whose curling shot narrowly missed the right hand post and Ken Ogbuagu’s glancing header went wide.
Windsor were feeling the pressure and eventually City capitalised when James Kaloczi intercepted a pass and put away Tremayne Charles down the left hand side who outpaced the defence and coolly slotted past the advancing keeper.
Despite getting players behind the ball Windsor spent a lot of time chasing City’s shadows and giving away freekicks, which finally resulted in their full-back seeing red on 38 minutes as the referee dismissed him for persistent abuse following a poor challenge.
City soon capitalised and Ken Ogbuagu scored the second goal as he was quickest to follow up Zazzera’s volley, beating the keeper on his near post.
This was undoubtably the best 45 minutes of controlled passing football that the youngsters had played since early in the season, but unfortunately in the second half Windsor’s tempers began to fray and freekicks were conceded on almost every play, breaking up any fluency.
This resulted in three more yellows for the home side and another red with just eight minutes left.
Despite the possession City only had one further goal to add to the tally, when another free-kick conceded on the edge of the box was clinically flighted over the wall and high into the net by substitute James Shaw with just his second touch.
Overall it was a very good and disciplined display by the young Saints against a dogged and determined opposition, who despite their red mist kept trying until the very end.
The win maintains the eight point gap over Uxbridge in second place, and with just three matches left the league title looks to be yellow and blue.
